Outdoor Wicker Patio Furniture – Protecting Your Furniture From the Outdoors

Outdoor wicker patio furniture is very resilient, but the elements to take their toll. Taking the time to protect your furniture is the best way to make sure it lasts for years to come. On the other hand, you may end up replacing much of it every year if you just let it sit outside and just hope nothing happens to it.

Rain, wind, snow, and even sunlight can do a lot of damage over time to even the best quality resin wicker patio furniture. Oxygen and water are necessary building blocks of life because they are extremely reactive, which is good for people, but bad for furniture. On top of that, wind, snow, and rain can all do a good amount of physical punishment to that same furniture. It is hard to really imagine how much that fluffy layer of snow on your furniture actually weighs.

The best solution for people in areas where there is an off season is to store your resin patio furniture in a basement, garage, or shed. The best way to protect something from the elements is to not expose it to the elements in the first place. Depending on how long the off season is where you live, this can add years and years to the life of your furniture. Spend a couple hours two times a year, and your furniture will last for years.

Still, this isn’t an option for everyone since many people don’t have enough storage space for all of their outdoor wicker patio furniture. In that case, spending the money and getting a good set of furniture covers is the second best choice. Keep in mind that grills and any other furniture using in cooking should have covers used year round for sanitary reasons.

Furniture covers for the outdoors is not a good area to cheap out in, spend the extra money and get the good cover. If you are lucky, you might get two years out of cheap covers, but if you buy them every two years, you end up spending more than you would if you just got the good covers in the first place. It isn’t a hard thing to judge, good covers feel heavier and more protective, it doesn’t take a very expert opinion to find good ones.

You do want the covers to completely cover your resin outdoor patio furniture, not just the tops. If they don’t go all the way to the ground, then you are likely to actually get squirrels and birds using them for shelter. On top of that, your furniture is still exposed if half of it is sticking out from under the cover. Better for the cover to be a little too big than too small.

If you have the storage space to store your furniture indoors during the off season or at least spend the money for a good set of covers, you can be sure that with a little work twice a year, you can help your furniture last from season to season. It is almost like someone is offering all the money for what you spent on your patio every year for about four hours of work a year.
